About Artist

Born in Bathurst and raised in Wallerawang NSW Sonia Cox is a local woman who proudly embraces both her rural and Wiradjuri heritage. Sonia’s artworks reflect the importance of nature to her own wellbeing. Her paintings are imbued with vibrant colour that represent the emotional response she has to the subtle tones of the Australian landscape and the subject matter she has chosen. Her artworks are painted directly onto layered paperbark that she has collected from a variety of sources. They have inbuilt texture and depth. Images appear and disappear through colour and pattern prompting the viewer to spend time with the painting. This time is not dissimilar to the meditative qualities of nature. The importance to Sonia in the connection between the healing qualities of nature, the act of creating and our own sense of wellbeing speaks to the growing interest among a wide range of people in the power of ‘dadirri’–inner deep listening and quiet, still awareness, which is so intrinsic to her Aboriginal culture and her relationship to Country.

Artist Statement

The spirit world is part of our physical world, our ancestors and creator spirits reside there. We feel them in the colours, warmth, the environment around us and hear them when we listen deeply, sitting within the quiet and still of nature.
Our ancestors lifeforce flows through all living things giving us layers of history. Mountains symbolise consistency, eternity, hold sacred sites, life-giving power and the heart of our ancestral spirits.
They teach us to walk slowly, breathe, to come into life, to embrace nature, to seek our ancestors and our stories and pass them to those who follow us.
