About Artist

Jasmine Bruce lives and works on Ngunnawal land in Canberra, ACT. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, her practice is intuitive and iterative. Creating sculptural forms and vessels out of discarded silk is her current medium.
These delicate yet robust structures are hand woven using an open twining technique. Constructing material into a three-dimensional form has enabled her to integrate the use of space and movement.
Making sculptural forms for Jasmine, is a way to explore the space between materiality and immateriality. Often the softness of the silk is contrasted with a stronger, more solid material like stone. Her current series incorporates quartz found in South Australia. Sourcing discarded fiber from the conventional silk spinning process, sustainability is a core part of her life and artwork.
Jasmine is currently working on an ongoing series that explores liminality as a broad concept to investigate times of transition and interrogate states of limbo, loss and uncertainty. Jasmine’s work was selected as a finalist in the 2024 Goulburn Art Award.

Artist Statement

This work explores the power and fragility of mountain glaciers. Inspired by a walk near the Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand. The slow but perpetual motion of a glacier demonstrates its power to adapt and regenerate as well as its vulnerability to dissolve by the slightest rise in temperature. Like water towers, glaciers are vital for the storage and distribution of freshwater. The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. Water Tower (III) represents how fragile we can feel in the face of loss and uncertainty.
