Indi Williams, an emerging New Zealand-raised artist studying Fine Arts at RMIT University, Melbourne, explores identity through oil, gouache, and acrylic paints, blending realism with abstract forms. By celebrating errors and interruptions, Williams challenges normative structures and explores new ways to construct identity. Her paintings feature large, sweeping brushstrokes and vibrant colours, interspersed with fragments of faces, encouraging viewers to reflect on the impact of technology on personal relationships and identity. Through distortions and fragmentations, Williams’ work advocates for imperfection as a form of resistance and liberation. She questions technology’s role in shaping identity, pondering whether it reinforces social inequalities or opens up new, diverse definitions of ‘normality’ and ‘beauty’.
