About Artist

The vast Australian landscape, with its dramatic light and rugged textures, never fails to inspire Tatiana Caines’ art. Her love for art blossomed later in life, but her passion for the environment has always been strong. Even though her career started in engineering, Tatiana found herself increasingly drawn to capturing the beauty and vulnerability of Australia’s natural world.

Formal art training at Lavender Art School and private lessons with Margaret Hadfield helped Tatiana refine her skills and develop her unique artistic voice. This journey empowered her to express her environmental concerns through various mediums, with oil paints being her primary choice.
Tatiana’s artwork goes beyond just showing a scene; it aims to spark conversation. Her bold colours and compositions invite viewers to think about the connection between humans and nature. By using symbols and a touch of exaggeration, Tatiana’s paintings act as a call to action, urging us to consider how our choices impact the future of the environment.

Artist Statement

I’m passionate about the challenges of protecting our environment. This painting is my way of showing that concern. While a photo I saw sparked the idea how to present it visually: it shows the turquoise water near Perth with urban sprawl 18km from the CBD, the actual sprawl continues north for nearly 60km and a massive 80km south, highlighting the concerning trend of large-scale coastal development we’re seeing across Australia.
This inspired me to create a powerful commentary. It portrays coastal development as a relentless concrete wave, a “Concrete Tsunami,” sweeping across a larger scale of coastal development across Australia.
