About Artist

Rosemary Morgan, also known as Parrabaty, was born in Daly River in 1958, where she was raised by her father. After attending primary and secondary school in Darwin, she returned to Daly River and worked various jobs until 1997. She then moved to Batchelor to care for her father, eventually settling in Bulgul after his passing. Parrabaty began painting in Daly River, initially creating small works for school auctions. Over time, she embraced painting as a means of sharing her stories, alongside her sisters and noted artists Agatha Ngakmik Morgan and Marjorie Terrikil Morgan, as well as her artist nieces Helen Tyalmuty McCarthy and Kerry Madawyn McCarthy. Parrabaty has participated in group exhibitions in Australia and Singapore, and she now paints full-time from Bulgul, drawing inspiration from her surroundings.

Artist Statement

This story is about my father, Liman Harry Morgan, a skilled canoe maker from the Territory. Amidst war, our family was relocated to Katherine, but my father insisted on returning home to Banakula. Evading detection, we trekked through the bush, surviving on bush tucker. Along the journey, my father crafted tools like spears and canoes for survival. I cared for my father at Bulgul, where he died, in June 2007 at the ripe old age of 91.
